General

What is the social media litigation?

It is a large group of lawsuits alleging that major social media platforms were designed in ways that encourage compulsive use by minors and contributed to mental-health and behavioral harms. Plaintiffs include individuals, families, school districts, local governments and state attorneys general. Defendants deny the allegations.

What is MDL 3047?

MDL No. 3047 is the federal multidistrict litigation that consolidates these cases before Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Consolidation lets one court manage shared issues while each plaintiff keeps its own claim.

Why are school districts involved?

School districts allege they have absorbed significant institutional costs responding to the effects of social media on students, such as added counseling staff, behavioral intervention, cyberbullying investigations, crisis response and technology to manage phones. Their claims seek recovery of the district’s own costs.

Which platforms are involved?
